No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man - Heraclitus
With our thematic curating, which has offered you La saison de La and Tete a tete a tetes, we wanted to present a season with multiple meeting points and convergences between LIVE music and dance. This new season manifests the intensity of dialogue which these two art forms have enjoyed with one another, there consonance with the ephemeral beauty of the instant, as well as the poetic fleetingness of a present which only serves to intensify their combined artistic actions. We propose therefore, to share with you a unique collective experience, the pleasure of presence, literally vibrating through the transient but unforgettable nature of the choreographic and musical works, which we will encounter, LIVE, and of the unequalled emotion of these potentially jolting collaborations. Thanks to our partnerships with the National Opera of Lorraine, the Symphonic and lyric orchestra of Nancy, the choir of the National Opera of Lorraine, The Talens lyrique and Nancy jazz pulsations, travelling from the written score to improvised music, from acoustic to amplified electrical sound, with Body beat, DJ Marc Lion, A. Pesle and You Man, LIVE! will cross a musical spectrum spanning from 1686 to 2014!
These encounters between the dancers of the CCN Ballet de Lorraine, ten choreographers, nine composers, musicians and singers from different organizations, will result in five world premiers, one historic work and two existing works from our repertory.
The CCN-Ballet de Lorraine, and its 26 dancers, is one of the most important and dynamic contemporary companies in Europe, presenting emblematic works by major choreographers. Our organization could be described as both material and immaterial, a space open and accessible to the public to partake in our daily practices and, as well the optimal place for many vibrant choreographic and cultural exchanges. It is an international company through the diversity of our invited artists and choreographers, the multiplicity of the theatres visited in the Lorraine region, in France, and abroad. We are an established institution that understands the importance of implementing educational projects, of choreographic development through residencies, partnerships and exchange, with classes and workshops all in the continued effort to communicate as directly as possible with the world, our audiences and the artists of today.
We sincerely hope we will have the opportunity to meet and share with you our unique artistic endeavours at the many different venues and spaces in Lorraine, in France and abroad, or just stop by our studios on 3 rue Henri Bazin!
A simple catchphrase for 2014-2015…
LIVE — to life!

We are thrilled to begin this season as we transform the National Opera of Lorraine into a vibrant, extroverted space in our collaboration with the festival Nancy Jazz Pulsations.
This program offers a delightful mix of choreographic and musical adventures. First we have a creation by Andonis Foniadakis as well as some sparkling revivals from the rep of the CCN – Ballet de Lorraine by none other than William Forsythe and Merce Cunningham, to music by Franz Schubert, John Adams, David Tudor and the eclectic electrical sounds of the artists from Alpage Records.
This program of multiple surprises is characterized by a permanent flow of music and dance, a continuous vibe marked by the vivacity of the different works and offering audiences the chance to participate both directly and actively.
“I was there! I shared in this unique experience!”
This series of three performances is like a pure moment of exaltation – welcome to the new season!

March 5, 6, 7, 2015 at 8:00 PM and March 8, 2015 at 3:00 PM at the National Opera of Lorraine with the Symphonic and Lyric Orchestra of Nancy
Two creations, two choreographers, two composers, one orchestra – a new rendez-vous at the top!
In this second program, we want to share with you the pleasure of choreographic and musical performance with a live orchestra, thanks to our partnership with the Symphonic and Lyric Orchestra of Nancy which will be working with us in an atypical group format for the creation by Alban Richard, and in a more traditional format for the creation by Itamar Serussi. The musicians will again be under the direction of Aurélien Azan-Zielinski, one year after Paris-New York-Paris.
The work of Alban Richard can be characterized as seen from first pieces by his continued research affirming a dynamic relationship between dance, music and lighting. The works of Itamar Serussi can be characterized as choreographic cyclones, leaving both the dancers and the audience in a state of astonishment after sharing the experience. Richard has chosen to choreograph to a fascinating piece with a hypnotic pulse by Louis Andriessen, and Serrussi has chosen to work with Hector Berlioz’ masterpiece, La Symphonie Fantastique.
With this creation Itamar Serussi proposes a contemporary re-connection to the romanticism of the Berlioz’ Symphonie Fantastique.

Program 3 : LIVEXPERIENCE
May 12, 13, 2015 at 8:00 PM and May 14 at 3:00 PM at the National Opera of Lorraine with the Chorus of the National Opera of Lorraine
LIVEXPERIENCE is a choreographic meeting of one of the most important choreographers of the last 30 years, William Forsythe meeting François Chaignaud and Cecilia Bengolea, French and Argentinian artists who have recently been lighting up the world’s stages with their intense, performative works.
We invite you to see – or see again – William Forsythe’s emblematic work Steptext, in which the choreographer willingly pushes the classical vocabulary beyond its limits.
Live music is also an essential component of this program, with a pianist performing Thom Willems’ score for Duo and the Chorus of the Opéra national de Lorraine singing Another Look at Harmony by Philip Glass for François Chaignaud and Cecilia Bengolea’s creation. One might imagine the sound as that of a serenade, but in this case it is unlike any other in its driving, glorious rhythm.

This season, LIVE! will conclude with this co-production beween the National Opera of Lorraine and the CCN – Ballet de Lorraine of the exceptional opera ballet of Jean-Baptiste Lully, Armide. This project, to which the CCN will be contributing the choreography, illustrates perfectly the central theme of LIVE! with its collaboration between music and dance, and the wonderful experience of live performance. In this work, the dance is integrated entirely into the opera, in fact it is an essential component of the work, there is music written specially for it and it is integral to the understanding and the imagination of the piece.
Armide, which brings together Christophe Rousset as musical director, David Hermann as director, and the two of us as choreographers, celebrates magisterially the union of music and dance and the beauty of the fleeting instant and emotion we all share.
