Season 2015/2016

Folk + Danse = (R) évolution

Who makes dances? We do!

Choreographer’s corporal experimentations often become codified little by little, continuing to evolve while they develop specific patterns. Even if their research resists, there is often an inevitable conservatory process. From this a new generation of choreographers question, evolving within or starting revolutions of their own, which send ripples of influence to our collective future dance.

We conceived our first program “American folk dancing” as an immersion into a particularly (r)evolutionary time and space for dance, a moment where society opened itself and stepped away from many dogmas and limitations of its past. 1970 to the early 80s, in an emblematic location: New York, two women, Twyla Tharp and Trisha Brown, were creating their own vernacular. A dance started to evolve through improvised explorations over a multitude of terrains, that wasn’t concerned with classical history but was grounded in how we as “folk” move. Free, open, it was often presented by its creators as being “danceable by everyone.” Later it would be codified, creating a legacy which, whether we want it to or not still influences dancers, choreographers and audiences today.

And we have chosen to share with you some of these pioneering moments in contemporary dance, bringing into the repertory of the CCN - Ballet de Lorraine The Fugue and Nine Sinatra Songs by Twyla Tharp and Opal Loop/Cloud Installation #72503 by Trisha Brown.

The act of looking back into our history is an immense resource for us: linking and connecting certain moments and nuances of our shared past enriches our own vision of the future. We are always able to start over – and over, but we cannot ever really wipe the slate completely clean.

What are the choreographers of today preparing for us? Will their creations become a new style of dance, will this style be evolutionary or revolutionary? How will their work reach us, how will it give us the courage to move forward? This artistic and political “itinerary” has been given to the choreographers Cindy Van Acker and Marcos Morau, who will be creating new works for the company in the second program of the 2015-16 season.

Research, experimentation, evolution and revolution (!) are part of our everyday life. Join us between March and May 2016, discovering another LAB BLA BAL PROGRAMME, which will consist of two Carte Blanche evenings offered to the dancers of the  company, the inviting of Il n’est pas encore minuit … by the Compagnie XY, and last but not least, a participative project, DISCOFOOT, for dance loving amateurs. With an original concept proposed by Petter Jacobsson and Thomas Caley, DISCOFOOT will be a wacky (!) tournament of danced soccer matches played according to a series of choreographed rules.

We will also present our end of year performance at the Opéra national de Lorraine with the students from the dance courses offered by of the CCN-Ballet de Lorraine.

We hope you will also join us for the many other community activities we offer over the season: open rehearsals, workshops, encounters with artists… as well as our partnerships with Nancy Jazz Pulsations, RING, the CCAM, L’autre Canal, the Centre Pompidou-Metz…. organized at our location at 3, rue Henri Bazin, or at other venues in the Nancy area. We hope you will join us in getting to know the many choreographers programmed around the Lorraine region between October and December 2015 under the auspices of the Dance Biennal Exp.Edition #02.

Artists have always been essential, contributing to the development and the elevation of our society. They expose us to the great political, social, artistic and cultural questions and problems that are currently part of our world. Through their work they question, they express their doubts and communicate, opening important cultural debates that may then be taken up by other artists and other individuals.

We invite you to join us for these (R)evolutions in 2015 – 2016 in Nancy, in the Lorraine region and on tour.
