Night of 100 Solos: A centennial event - Barbican Center - Londres (UK)
This one-time special Cunningham Event that will comprise a unique and specifically designed performance for each city. Taken together, the three will be the largest Cunningham Event ever made.
Each theatre will host 100 solos from Merce Cunningham’s choreography that are composed into a seventy-five (75) minute Event by one of three former dancers experienced in creating Cunningham Events. Continuing the design instituted by Cunningham himself, it will be impossible for any one person to see all of the dancing in live performance. However, reflecting his own interests in technology and leveraging the reality of activity in multiple time zones, we intend to offer the possibility of experiencing each stage hosting the Centennial Event through live streaming from all the venues. In this way, over the course of the day, everyone regardless of where they are located, can experience the entire Night of 100 Solos: an Event across the globe.
The material for each stage will include choreography Cunningham created in his broad and diverse career, which spanned more than seven decades. Rather than engage a particular company to perform on the evening, the Event will be performed by leading dancers from around the world who demonstrate that Cunningham work and choreography live on in the bodies of diverse dancers.
The evening will be graced with a set specifically curated for each venue and performed with live music. Each city’s composers and musicians, represent a curatorial expression based on Cunningham’s musical interests over the course of his lifetime, and with the support of former members of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company’s Music Committee.
More information and details of the performances and the performers will be released in November.
Night of 100 Solos: A Centennial Event is supported in part through the generosity of the Howard Gilman Foundation.
