A new dance
« In the big room ,the people come. Some are above and some are below, some are quite far away and some are close enough to touch. No one is better or worse than the other. Nothing is pure or neutral, not anymore. (It never was.) We are still learning how to be alive, how to be together. How to understand difference at a time of increasing anxiety. What happens when a society of individuals produce multivalent, unstable but dynamic meaning? Let’s call it a dance. Why struggle for coherence, when illegibility is the only political recourse that remains? The current moment holds infinite sorrow. But fuck it, I’m not crying. Either way, tonight we will sleep in our beds, alone or entangled, as the moon shines. »

Rehearsals open to audiences allow them to observe the intimacy of the choreographer and his/ her dancers at work. They are interactive, and include exchanges with audiences in attendance.

Miguel Gutierrez
Miguel Gutierrez lives in Brooklyn, NY, where he has been making performances, music and poetry for over twenty years. He has been called “one of our most provocative and necessary artistic voices” by Eva Yaa Asantewaa at Dance Magazine. His recent work includes a trilogy called Age & Beauty, which places a queer lens on mortality, the representation of the dancer, the intersection of administration with art-making, and futurity. It was presented at Centre National de Danse/Pantin, Centre Pompidou, Kampnagel, Philly Live Arts, New York Live Arts, Live Arts Bard, AMERICAN REALNESS and the 2014 Whitney Biennial. His work is characterized by the immersive quality of the attentive state it imposes on the audience, and centers around enduring philosophical questions about desire, longing and the search for meaning. Previous commissions include Brindabella for Philip Adams’ BalletLab in Melbourne, Australia, YOU ARE GORGEOUS AND I’M COMING for The Fondue Set in Sydney, Australia, and I’m sitting on my aura for the graduating students at DOCH in Stockholm, Sweden.
He has received support from various foundations, including Creative Capital, MAP, National Dance Project, Jerome Foundation, New York Foundation for the Arts and the Tides Foundation. He is the recipient of three New York Dance and Performance Bessie Awards. In 2010 he received a Guggenheim Fellowship, as well as awards from Foundation for Contemporary Arts and United States Artists. He is a 2016 Doris Duke Artist.
He has created music for several of his works, for choreographer Antonio Ramos, and in collaboration with Colin Self for Jen Rosenblit and Simone Aughterlony’s Everything Fits In The Room. As a singer he has perfomed with Anohni, Justin Vivian Bond, Vincent Segal, Nick Hallett, and in his new music project SADONNA, sad interpretations of Madonna songs.
He invented DEEP AEROBICS and he is a Feldenkrais Method® practitioner. He teaches regularly all over the world, and he is the program director for LANDING, a new educational initiative at Gibney Dance Center.
